Thanksgiving

It’s November which means the Holiday season is in full swing. The stores are filled with sparkling lights, trees, gifts and Christmas displays. Even streets, stores, businesses, and homes already display their twinkling lights and holiday cheer. Don’t blink because we all know how quickly this season flies by, so let’s slow our pace and take it all in.

Before we rush too quickly into the Christmas holiday, let’s remember a little holiday known as Thanksgiving. In September 1620, a ship called the Mayflower came to America. At that time, there was not a Country called America but rather a new land that offered the 102 passengers of the Mayflower new opportunity and prosperity. These passengers were known as the Pilgrims and they settled and began working to establish a village.

However, this new land proved to be perilous as only half of the Pilgrims survived the winter and saw their first New England spring. The spring brought new hope and new friends as the colonists, who by then were weakened and close to death, were helped by the Wampanoag Indian tribe. These Indians taught the new colonists how to grow vegetables and hunt in this foreign land. Following the first corn harvest it was decided that a feast should be had to celebrate and give thanks for the harvest as well as the unlikely alliance between the Pilgrims and the Indians. Thus, the first Thanksgiving took place in 1621.

Ultimately, history would tell of a hostile and bloody relationship between American Settlers and Native Americans which resulted in many battles and deaths on both sides. This relationship between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indian Tribe would live on as one of the only examples of peace between colonists and Native Americans.

In America today, Thanksgiving has become a day to spend with family and friends, to attend parades, and indulge in lots of delicious foods. Before we leave the Thanksgiving feast to rush to the store for those black Friday deals, let’s be sure to once again, slow our pace and take it all in.
